If I've not miscounted, I think I already have the required number of posts. However, back in October, I said that I was going to see if my opinion about Wix changed after using it for a few months. Since I don't like to say I'm going to do something and then not do it, here’s one extra post about Wix and using Wix in a classroom.
Disclaimer: everything about Wix will refer to the free version of Wix, which is what we all have used to create our websites. I have never used the paid version, so I don't have any personal experience with it.
What did I think back in October?
TV shows have recaps, so why not include one in a blog. If you want to read the whole post, the link to it is in the first paragraph. If not, here's a summary. Basically, I said that I liked the amount of free templates and that people didn't need to know any code, since the site is very visual, but that I wasn't a big fan of Wix. The reason was that I thought it made easy things unnecessarily complicated and that accessibility was not as intuitive as it should be.
Has my opinion about Wix changed?
That's a very good question and I don't really have a definitive answer. I still think that Wix is a huge pain sometimes and that it is a bit deceiving since it seems to be very easy to use, but ends up not being as intuitive as it appears to be. However, I also think that moving boxes around and seeing what you are creating while you are creating it does help people gain a sense of accomplishment that might boost their self-efficacy regarding building webpages.
There's always a certain amount of personal preference involved when picking a platform for a site. It doesn't matter if the goal is a personal blog, a commercial website or a class portfolio. Obviously, a class assignment would never require self-hosted anything. That costs money and it can be a pain when things don't go as planned if you don't understand what you’re doing.
So, would I choose Wix for myself? No way. Even if I wanted a free site, I'd go with a platform that would give me more freedom in more areas than Wix does. Nevertheless, Wix is a good idea for a class assignment. After using it for a few months, while there were a few hiccups at first, things went well once I figured out Wix's logic. While things are not always where I would expect to find them, they're not in completely random places. Also, the sense of self-efficacy that I mentioned is very important and should not be disregarded. After all, the first step towards achieving something is believing you can do it.
